The 14th Operations Group was started in 1941 as the 14th Pursuit Group. After flying defensive patrols along the West Coast post-Pearl Harbor attack, the Pursuit Group became the 14th Fighter Group and deployed to England in the summer of 1942. Later that year, the group achieved two firsts for the U.S. during the war; one of their Lieutenants became the first ace and another Lt. shot down the first German plane over Algerian/Tunisian airspace (where the group was stationed during the North African campaign.) In 1943, the group flew bombing missions to help with the invasions of Sicily and Italy, in the process making another of their Lts an ace in a single day after he shot down 5 German junkers. The group continued to support bomber missions across Europe and, while escorting Twelfth Air Force bombers over Austria, fought off several enemy attacks and was awarded a Distinguished Unit Citation. During the later 1940s the 14th defended the northeastern U.S. under the Air Defense Command (ADC) until deactivation in 1960. The Operations Group was brought back in 1991 and assigned to the 14th FTW to train Air Force pilots. The mid-1990s saw some of the first female airmen enter fighter training courses and graduated the first woman to make it into further combat training on the B-52 Stratofortress.
